Archbishop Mpako Calls on Faithful to Support the Archdiocese of Pretoria

By Fr Mathibela Sebothoma

On 21 September 2024, the Archdiocese of Pretoria held a significant gathering to foster unity and secure the financial independence of the Church’s central administration. Beginning with Holy Mass at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Pretoria, and followed by celebrations at Loreto Convent High School next door, the event brought together Parish Pastoral Councils and parish priests from every parish in the Archdiocese.

A Family of Faith

Presiding over the Holy Mass, Archbishop Dabula Mpako reminded the faithful that they are part of a larger spiritual family. He stressed the importance of each parish’s contribution toward the Archdiocese, encouraging parishioners to view their offerings as acts of stewardship and unity.

“The Archdiocese is not simply an institution—it is our collective family,” Archbishop Mpako said. “Each parish and parishioner plays a vital role in ensuring the continued vitality and growth of our Archdiocese.”

Celebrating Contributions

The event proved to be a great success, with a total of R738,196.14 raised to support the central administration of the Archdiocese. Archbishop Mpako expressed deep gratitude for the collective effort, noting the profound impact these contributions will have on the Archdiocese’s ability to serve its people.

In a special acknowledgment, the Archbishop highlighted the significant role played by smaller and rural parishes, many of which benefit from Archdiocesan subsidies. “Though their contributions may seem small in comparison, their impact is immense,” Archbishop Mpako remarked. “These parishes show that, regardless of size, every effort counts. Their faithfulness and commitment to giving are an inspiration to all of us.”

Auxiliary Bishop Selemela’s Vision for 2025

Auxiliary Bishop Masilo Selemela reinforced the importance of unity within the Archdiocese, stressing that every individual and parish contributes to the larger mission of the Church. He emphasized his signature slogan, “I am the Church, you are the Church, We are the Church,” and encouraged attendees to embrace their roles within the community.

Bishop Selemela also announced an ambitious financial target for 2025, aiming to raise R2,000,000 to further support the Archdiocese. “This goal may be challenging, but we have shown that, when we stand together, we can achieve great things,” he said.

Moving Forward as One Church

The day’s celebrations were not solely focused on fundraising but also provided an opportunity for parishes to engage with one another, sharing ideas on how to strengthen the spiritual and financial health of their communities. The informal discussions, held at Loreto Convent High School, underlined the importance of working collaboratively to ensure the Archdiocese’s future.

Archbishop Mpako’s acknowledgment of small and rural parishes illustrated the inclusivity of the Archdiocese’s vision, reminding the faithful that every contribution, no matter how modest, has the potential to create a lasting impact. “The small yet consistent contributions from these communities allow us to continue our mission, even in the most remote areas of the Archdiocese,” he said.

As the Archdiocese of Pretoria looks to the future, Archbishop Mpako and Bishop Selemela’s messages of unity, stewardship, and shared responsibility will continue to guide its people. The generous contributions made during the event have set a strong foundation for the Archdiocese’s mission, and the faithful are encouraged to carry this spirit of giving forward into 2025 and beyond.
