The Catholic community gathered at the Church of the Beatitudes in the Archdiocese of Pretoria to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Auxiliary Bishop Masilo John Selemela’s priestly ordination. The day was filled with a solemn Mass, heartfelt speeches, and a deep sense of gratitude for his service.
A Solemn Celebration of Service
The celebration centred on a solemn Mass, enriched by scripture readings from Isaiah 42:1-6, Philippians 4:4-9, and John 15:9-17, focusing on the theme of servant leadership.
In his homily, Fr. Patrick Rakeketsi, CSS, praised Bishop Selemela’s selfless dedication to serving God and His people, drawing parallels to the biblical servant in Isaiah. He encouraged the Bishop to continue embodying Christ’s love, particularly towards the marginalised. Fr. Rakeketsi also highlighted the sacrament of priesthood as an embodiment of love, forgiveness, and joy in service.
Words of Gratitude and Inspiration
Fr. Amos Mabuti Masemola delivered a moving tribute to Bishop Selemela’s ministry since his ordination on 12 June 1999 in the Diocese of Tzaneen. He commended the Bishop’s compassionate pastoral care, eloquent homilies, and tireless service, describing him as an inspiration and a true shepherd.
Addressing the younger generation, Fr. Masemola encouraged them to answer God’s call fearlessly, assuring them that the priesthood, rooted in faith, is profoundly fulfilling. On behalf of the community, he extended congratulations to Bishop Selemela and prayed for continued blessings.

The joyous celebration continued late into the night, with friends, family, and clergy expressing their gratitude and sharing in the Bishop’s milestone achievement.
Bishop Masilo Selemela’s Response
With deep emotion, Bishop Selemela expressed his gratitude:
“May I begin by thanking God for the gift of my vocation. Today, I give thanks for the joys, pains, and sorrows that have shaped my priesthood since my ordination in 1999.
I am especially grateful to Bishop Hugh Slattery MSC, who ordained me and nurtured my growth as a priest. Two pillars have sustained me in ministry: the celebration of the Eucharist and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. These have helped me see God in all I do and in the people I encounter.
To Archbishop Dabula Mpako, my brother priests, and my classmates, I owe a great debt of gratitude for their unwavering support. To my family—the Selemela, Makgoba, Masedi, Ramuedzisi, Phathela, and Shongwe families—thank you for your love and encouragement.
I must also thank Mrs Audrey Mummy Molokwane, who supported me during one of the most challenging times of my life after surviving a motor vehicle accident that tragically claimed the lives of two priests who were my colleagues and formators at St. John Vianney Seminary. Seeing her tears during today’s celebration moved me deeply and reminded me of the grace and strength God has provided throughout my ministry.
Finally, I thank the parishioners of Tzaneen, St. Gregory the Great, and Zwavelpoort for their prayers and contributions. May God continue to bless us as we journey together in faith.”
Looking Ahead
The Silver Jubilee celebration was a moment of joy and inspiration, honouring Bishop Selemela’s enduring faith and service. The community looks forward to his continued leadership, marked by love, resilience, and unwavering devotion.
