On Sunday, St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Pretoria West hosted a heartfelt celebration to mark the World Day of Migrants and Refugees under the theme: “God Walks with His People.” The event was organised by Caritas Pretoria, with the collaboration of Caritas St. Joseph the Worker, Pretoria West, bringing together the local community to honour and support the vulnerable.
The celebration began with a solemn Mass, led by Fr. Henry Gonsan, while Deacon Gregory Mogale delivered a moving homily. Deacon Mogale drew from the readings of the day and Pope Francis’ message, reminding the congregation of the Church’s responsibility to walk with those who are displaced and seeking refuge, just as God walks with His people through all trials.
Deacon Mogale highlighted the Pope’s call to embrace a culture of encounter, stressing the need for solidarity with migrants and refugees, especially in times of global hardship. He echoed the Pope’s message that every displaced person carries a story, a journey, and hope for a new beginning. He urged the faithful to offer not only material assistance but also compassion and companionship.
As an expression of this solidarity, food parcels and vouchers were distributed to those in need after Mass. This act of charity symbolised the Church’s unwavering commitment to serving the most vulnerable members of society. The day powerfully reminded us that migrants and refugees are part of our shared human family and that our collective efforts are needed to ensure no one walks alone.
The celebration was beautifully captured by Sr. Franka Dzeaye Suinyuy and Sr. Marta Vargas Hernandez, whose photography immortalised the unity and love that permeated the event.
The World Day of Migrants and Refugees serves as a call to communities worldwide to reflect on their role in welcoming, protecting, and integrating those seeking safety and a new life. Through the work of Caritas Pretoria and St. Joseph the Worker Parish, the spirit of Ubuntu was alive, ensuring that no one journeys alone.
