Friends of St John Vianney Seminary Host Five-Star Inaugural Memorial Lecture and Fundraising Dinner

In what is set to become one of the most distinguished occasions on the Catholic calendar in Southern Africa, the Friends of St John Vianney Seminary will host the inaugural St John Vianney Memorial Lecture and Fundraising Dinner on 27 April 2025, aligning with South Africa’s Freedom Day celebrations. The prestigious event will be held at Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria, aimed at raising crucial funds to support the seminary’s mission and ongoing upkeep.
Taking place just one day after the burial of Pope Francis, the gathering will open with a moment of silence in tribute to the late pontiff, placing the evening in both a global and spiritual context.
Project Manager and Event Coordinator, Mr Ndhlabule Shongwe, expressed immense gratitude for the public’s enthusiasm.

“Excitement is mounting and reaching fever pitch—almost palpable—as Friends of the Seminary wrap up preparations,” he said. “We’ve sold 90% of the available tables. Our initial target was a modest 400 guests, but judging from the overwhelming interest, we may need a bigger venue next year.”

The Friends of the Seminary is a nationwide association of philanthropic Catholics dedicated to supporting the formation of future priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay scholars in philosophy, spirituality, and theology.

“Gone are the days of relying on overseas missionaries and foreign donors,” Shongwe emphasised. “We must take ownership of the formation of our own clergy and religious leaders—those who will carry forward the mission of the Church in our communities.”

Delivering the keynote address will be Auxiliary Bishop Masilo John Selemela of Pretoria, a former rector of the seminary. Drawing on his deep connection to both the institution and the legacy of its patron, St John Vianney, the bishop will present a reflection on self-sacrifice and tireless pastoral work as a guide for modern-day Catholics.

“The seminary forms pastors who are central to evangelisation and the celebration of the Eucharist,” said Shongwe. “This event is both spiritual and practical—raising funds while deepening awareness.”

But, as Shongwe added with a smile, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” The evening promises an elegant mix of inspiration and enjoyment. Guests can look forward to a performance by Thabang Senekal & Friends (opera), comedy by Jazzbuda, and a festive after-party led by DJ Thlaki ‘The Best’ Mothabela.
The black-tie affair will also include a sumptuous five-course gourmet meal served in a ballroom-style setting. An exclusive auction will feature luxury holiday packages, original oil paintings, Persian and Turkish carpets, and a party package valued at R100,000, generously sponsored by Cartel Group.
Notable attendees will include Archbishop Dabula MpakoFr Ncedo Siwundla (current Rector of SJV), and academic and business luminary Dr Vincent Maphai. The event will be co-hosted by Kalane Rampai, a leading business executive, and Brenda Seopesengwe, a dynamic social activist.

“All proceeds will be ring-fenced and directed to specific needs at the seminary,” said Shongwe. “Already, funds have helped renovate bathrooms, retile living areas, and maintain gardens and recreational spaces.”

In a touching personal story, Shongwe recounted a recent encounter in KwaZulu-Natal with Fr Siyabonga Khumalo, a newly ordained priest who recognised him and thanked him for his support during his time in formation.

“That moment reminded me why we do this,” he said. “You never know how your small act of charity will inspire someone else’s calling.”

Established by the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC)St John Vianney Seminary has for decades produced respected and competent clergy, many of whom have returned as rectors, formators, or have risen to the episcopacy.
The organisers plan to turn this event into an annual tradition, extending its reach to other dioceses and potentially across borders. While rooted in the Catholic community, the invitation is open to all Christians and benefactors keen to support a cause with a tangible spiritual impact.

“Support us by buying the last few tables, taking part in the auction, or pledging regular donations,” Shongwe urged. “But most importantly, join Friends of the Seminary—not for financial gain, but for the joy of spiritual fulfilment and service.”

“This is not just an event,” he concluded. “It’s a movement. A legacy we are building together—for the Church, for our communities, and for future generations of Catholics.”

Tickets are available at R10,000 for a table of ten or R2,000 per couple. Find details on the seminary’s social media under “SJV Memorial Lecture” and on their official website.
With the event set to begin at 15:00 after Sunday Mass, and the following day being a public holiday, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for the Catholic community to come together in celebration and purpose.
