In a moving celebration of inclusion and faith, the SPRED (Special Religious Development) Mass took place at the Church of Santa Maria dos Portugueses, the Portuguese Catholic Church, bringing together SPRED groups from across the Archdiocese. The Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Dabula and assisted by Deacon Anthony Gumede, marked the culmination of a year’s journey of catechesis and growth for the SPRED community.

SPRED’s mission is unique in its approach, fostering an environment where each person—regardless of their abilities—is treated with dignity and respect. During the Mass, all groups took part in the processions and liturgical roles, embodying the SPRED philosophy of full participation and equality within the circle of faith. The circular seating, a hallmark of SPRED gatherings, was present, symbolizing God’s eternal nature—no beginning and no end. This setup also allowed every participant, including the friends with developmental disabilities, to engage directly, fostering eye contact, equality, and mutual respect.

Each year, SPRED follows a cycle beginning close to the first Sunday of Advent, aligning its sessions with the Church’s liturgical calendar as well as the rhythms of nature. The program draws on experiential, liturgical, and symbolic catechesis, aiming to integrate SPRED members into the broader faith life of the parish, culminating in their celebration of the Eucharist together.

This event was particularly special as it represented the final part of the SPRED catechetical circle for the year, offering both participants and supporters a moment of reflection and gratitude. Sr. Teresa Marie Healey, who works with the Catechetical Commission of the Archdiocese of Pretoria, has been a vital advocate for SPRED and expressed her joy in seeing the program’s impact on individuals and parishes alike.

The SPRED Mass was not just a gathering, but a powerful reminder of the Church’s commitment to inclusion and the deep value of each person in the faith community. Through SPRED, the Archdiocese of Pretoria reaffirms that everyone, regardless of ability, has a place and a purpose in the life of the Church.
